Talks

Kevin Lesko - Neutrino Experiments
Dr. Lesko discussed the history and future of neutrino detection and explained why neutrino study may uncover fundamental cosmological questions. He introduced the Solar Neutrino Problem and presented the solution process with recent experiments conducted at the underground Sudbury Neutrino Observatory in Canada. Lecture summary.

Brian Mendez - WISE Mission
Dr. Mendez discussed WISE, a new NASA mission that is scheduled to launch at the end of 2009.  It will survey the entire sky in the mid-infrared range with far greater sensitivity than any previous mission. The information generated from this project will be directly available for public school teachers to utilize in science classrooms. Lecture summary.

Jennifer Perazzo & Laurie Kerrigan - Cosmology Jeopardy

With host Jennifer Perazzo, the students were challenged to a modified game of Cosmology Jeopardy. The questions spanned all topics covered in the workshop and responses had to be in the form of a question. The winning team received a grand prize of a Night Sky Star Wheel.

Final Concept Maps

The students were asked to create a final draft of their Cosmology concept maps. A concept map is a diagram with hierarchical nodes, labeled with concepts. The nodes are linked together with directional lines and are arranged from general to specific. Individual concept maps were placed along a hallway where everyone could see at other participants' views on cosmology and the universe. Digital photos were taken of each concept map for individual evaluation.
