Beyond the Standard Model of Particles and Interactions

Kevin Lesko - Neutrino Astrophysics

Dr. Lesko discussed the history and future of neutrino detection and explained why neutrino study may uncover fundamental cosmological questions. He introduced the Solar Neutrino Problem and presented the solution process with r experiments conducted at the underground Sudbury Neutrino Observatory in Canada. He also discussed DUSEL - the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory in South Dakota being created from a mine in South Dakota. Lecture summary.

Black Body Spectrum, Heat and Temperature - Rollie Otto

Students took temperature readings of each other and objects in the room using non-contact thermometers. Rollie Otto described a blackbody spectrum and how it relates to heat and temperature. The Stefan-Boltzmann law was explained along with its application to astrophysics.  He used the following interactive website that showed the spectra while manipulating the wavelength and temperature axes:

Marshmallow Nuclei - Rollie Otto

In this activity students demonstrated nuclear physics with marshmallows. White marshmallows represented protons and green marshmallows represented neutrons. The students were guided through nuclear processes such as fission and radioactive decay with their own marshmallow nuclei. This involved manipulating and creating elements such as carbon and oxygen.
