Salsa J Astronomical Imaging Software with Jenifer Perazzo
(Hands On Universe Teacher Leader and Science Teacher)

Ms. Perazzo introduced the EU-HOU astronomical image analysis tool, Salsa J - a software program dedicated to image handling and analysis in the classroom. During the session, the students studied galaxy image brightness using grey scale display, zoom features, plotting profiles, and surfaces values. They practiced adding and subtracting two images, making a movie of Jupiter's moons, and determined the photometry of a supernova. They also combined color images of nebulae and recreated the phases of the moon with Salsa J.

1. Use Newtonian mechanics to calculate the mass of the Milky Way from it rotational velocity and radius.

2. Estimate the amount of mass lost by the Sun every second given it’s  luminosity.  Assume the sun is an average star in the Milky Way and estimate the mass lost by the Milky Way every second.
