Rosemary Nocera
I am a multimedia artist, writer, and consultant developing strategy for education and outreach activities through video and online media. I also create website design/content for BCCP. My fine arts background includes design, illustration, portraiture, and music composition. After years of working with chemicals and solvents in art production, I studied environmental science and policy and work with less toxic materials. I developed and taught a class that combined art and science for elementary school students, because understanding how form follows function is critical to encouraging objective analysis and appreciating the vast variety of design in nature. It is never too early to introduce this concept, because we have an innate aesthetic and comprehension of structure. I am a synesthete and believe that the intersection of art and science is the driving force of culture. Film is the most powerful social and artistic medium, and I produce all aspects of the videos for the BCCP cosmology workshops and the New Scientist video series that feature BCCP post docs. The student science videos from the workshops are made under extreme time and information assimilation constraints, and student effort to write and shoot a video in 2 days are heroic (and exceedingly hectic). I also offer the science comic as an alternative to video for students (see below). After working in film and television, I discovered that my own art culminates best in film. I have produced several short films and have screenplays in development. I promoted the concept of hosting a YouTube student science video competition. Production values are an important component of a viable and compelling film - here are some video production guidelines. My interests include syncretic assimilation/adaptation in human culture, arbitrating syntax/semantics in the digital era, applied sociobiology, and determining what the organism is trying to do.
This is my submission to the Google 10100 Project:
To read more about this idea, go to the 'more info' section on the YouTube link. Video submissions had to be 30 seconds max. I also submitted a program idea for at-risk students, but did not create a video for it. (These are independent projects)
